Kit Digital in Granada: free website grants (and why most don't generate clients)

Spain's Kit Digital programme funds up to €2,000 for your website. But there's something nobody tells you before you sign.

Kit Digital Granada - Website grants for local businesses
Quick answer

Kit Digital funds up to €2,000 for a website for freelancers and SMEs in Granada through EU Next Generation funds. It costs you nothing out of pocket, but quality varies greatly between agencies. Choose a digitalisation agent who prioritises real results over grant volume.

If you run a business in Granada and have heard about Kit Digital, you've probably been told you can get a website for almost nothing thanks to Spanish government grants. And it's true: the programme exists, the money is available, and agencies in Granada are ready to build your site for zero out-of-pocket cost.

But there's something almost nobody tells you before you sign. And it's what makes the difference between having a website that brings you clients every month — and having a website that simply exists, taking up space on the internet without generating a single booking, call or enquiry.

In this article I'll explain what Kit Digital is, how much money you can get in Granada, how to apply for it, and — most importantly — what questions to ask before choosing who builds your site.

What is Kit Digital and who can apply?

Kit Digital is a Spanish Government aid programme, funded by Next Generation EU funds, designed to digitalise small businesses, micro-enterprises and the self-employed. In Granada, as across Spain, you can apply if:

  • You are self-employed or run a business with fewer than 50 employees
  • You have been trading for at least 6 months
  • You are up to date with tax and social security obligations
  • You haven't exceeded the de minimis aid threshold in the past three years

The process starts at acelerapyme.gob.es, where you complete a free digital maturity test. Once approved, you receive a voucher to spend with an accredited digital agency.

💰 How much is available for your website?

The «Website and Online Presence» category funds up to €2,000 for businesses of up to 49 employees. This covers design, development, 12 months hosting and basic SEO. Always check the current amounts on the official Red.es website, as the programme is updated periodically.

The problem nobody tells you: the template web trap

The Ministry sets minimum requirements for the website solution: mobile-responsive, a CMS, GDPR compliance, basic business content and 12 months of operation. Those requirements are achievable with a WordPress site installed in 2 hours, a €60 theme and four pages of generic text. And that is, exactly, what many agencies deliver.

Not all of them — there are honest agencies doing good work with Kit Digital. But the programme's business model incentivises volume over quality: the more websites you deliver per month, the more vouchers you collect. The result is a market flooded with websites that tick the bureaucratic boxes but aren't designed to generate real business.

📉 The painful statistic

A slow, template-based website with no real local SEO can take years to appear on Google — or never appear at all. A Backlinko study (2020) found that 75% of users never go past the first page of results. If your website isn't on that first page for searches like «hairdresser Granada» or «emergency plumber Granada», for your potential customers it simply doesn't exist.

Template web vs. business-optimised web: the real differences

Imagine two restaurants in Granada applying for Kit Digital the same month. Both receive €2,000. But they choose different agencies.

Restaurant A picks the fastest agency, which delivers the site in two weeks. Standard template, stock photos, generic text about «quality Mediterranean cuisine». The website exists. It meets the Ministry's requirements. The voucher is validated.

Restaurant B takes a month longer. The agency asks questions: what's your signature dish? Who's your ideal customer? Do you have real photos of the restaurant? The website is built with specific text to rank on Google («romantic restaurant Granada», «set lunch menu Realejo»), optimised loading speed, a visible booking button on mobile, and a properly linked Google My Business profile.

Three months later, Restaurant A still gets no bookings from the web. Restaurant B gets 15–20 direct monthly bookings. The cost difference was zero — both used the same €2,000 voucher.

How to spot whether a website will generate clients (before signing)

1. What Google PageSpeed score do their websites get?

Go to pagespeed.web.dev, enter the URL of a website that agency built, and check the mobile results. Below 80 means ranking difficulties. Below 50 means Google actively penalises it. A properly built website should score above 90, ideally 100.

2. Does any of their work appear on Google for real local searches?

Search Google for «[business type] + [neighbourhood or city]» for a client that agency has worked with. If the site doesn't appear on the first page after several months, the local SEO hasn't been done properly.

3. Does the website have clear calls to action on mobile?

Open it on your phone. Within 3 seconds, can you see the button to call, book or contact? Or do you have to scroll and search? 70% of visitors to a local business website arrive on mobile. If the site isn't designed to convert on mobile, the money is wasted.

🔍 My real score, audited by Google

This portfolio achieves 100/100 in performance, accessibility, best practices and SEO on Google's official Lighthouse audit — measured on mobile with simulated 4G. It's not a made-up number: check it yourself at pagespeed.web.dev by typing pablogomezvillen.com. That's what I build for every client.

Is Kit Digital worth it even if the website isn't perfect?

Yes — with caveats. If your business has no digital presence, even a basic website is better than nothing. Having a site with your address, hours, phone and some services already helps Google find you and gives potential clients somewhere to land after seeing you on Google Maps.

The problem comes when that basic website stays as-is forever — no updates, no new content, no speed improvements — and the business waits for results that never come.

Kit Digital can be an excellent starting point. But if you want that investment (even if it's public money) to actually work for your business, you need to make sure what you receive is well-built from the start.

Frequently asked questions about Kit Digital in Granada

Can I apply for Kit Digital if I'm self-employed?

Yes. Self-employed workers with economic activity can apply for the voucher as long as they meet the turnover requirements and have no outstanding debts with the Social Security or Tax Agency. Segment III (0–2 employees) covers grants of up to €2,000 for «Website and Online Presence». Check the updated eligibility criteria at AceleraPyme.

What is the difference between a Kit Digital website and a custom website?

The main difference is the starting point: Kit Digital websites are typically WordPress or Wix templates adapted with the business's logo and text. A custom website is built from scratch around the specific objectives of the business — how you acquire clients, what makes someone call you instead of a competitor, how you convert visitors into bookings or sales. The resulting code is cleaner, faster and easier to rank on Google.

How long does it take for a website to rank on Google?

SEO is a medium-term investment: the first visible results typically appear between 3 and 6 months after publishing the website. However, several factors accelerate or slow that process: loading speed, technical optimisation, content quality and the competitiveness of your sector. A technically correct website (with Lighthouse at 100) has a head start over an unoptimised template from day one.

Does Kit Digital cover website maintenance?

The voucher includes hosting for 12 months and usually basic maintenance during that period. After that, the business takes on the maintenance, update and hosting costs. It's important to clarify this with the digital agency before signing so there are no surprises the following year.

What if my website already exists but I want to improve it with Kit Digital?

Kit Digital covers the creation of a new website or migration and improvement of an existing one, depending on the agency and the programme requirements for each funding round. The important thing is not to settle for what you already have if it's not generating results — a website that doesn't appear on Google or takes more than 3 seconds to load on mobile may be costing you clients every single day.
